Booking and fares
How the desk works, what a quote means, and when to book.
How do I book Amtrak tickets by phone?
Call (808) 857-3780 and tell the specialist your route, travel dates, party size, and whether you want Coach or a sleeper. We check availability, explain the total and the fare rules, and confirm the reservation after you approve.
Can I book online through this website?
This website is a research and call-generation site, not a live booking engine. The fare tables show sample starting prices. To check real availability and complete a reservation, call the desk.
Are the prices on this site live quotes?
No. Sample fares are starting points for budgeting. Live prices change with date, direction, demand, accommodation type, and vehicle size. Only a price confirmed by a specialist for your specific trip is a quote.
Do you charge a service fee?
Any service fee is disclosed before you confirm and pay. We do not add hidden charges after the fact. If a fee applies to a later change or cancellation, we explain it before doing the work.
How far in advance should I book?
For sleepers, earlier is usually better — especially on the California Zephyr, Empire Builder, and Auto Train. Two to six months ahead is common for peak dates. Coach can sometimes be booked closer in, but fares generally rise as the train fills.
Roomettes and Bedrooms
Room sizes, bathrooms, meals, and sleeper value.
What is the difference between a Roomette and a Bedroom?
A Roomette is a compact private room for one or two passengers with two seats that convert into upper and lower berths; restrooms and showers are shared. A Bedroom is roughly twice the size and adds a private toilet, sink, and shower inside the room.
How much does an Amtrak Roomette cost?
On a one-night route, Roomettes commonly start around $200–$400 one way. Two-night transcontinental trips and peak dates cost more. The fare includes the room and, on overnight trains, onboard meals. Call for a live quote on your dates.
Can two adults share a Roomette?
Yes. The room sleeps two, with one lower and one upper berth. It is cozy, and the upper berth requires climbing a small ladder. Couples who want more space often choose a Bedroom.
Are meals included in a sleeper?
On overnight trains, sleeper passengers generally receive dining-car meals, water, and attendant service. Exact meal service varies by route and direction. Coach passengers can purchase food in the café car.
Is a sleeper car worth the extra cost?
For an overnight trip, usually yes if privacy and a flat bed matter to you. For a daytime trip under six hours, Coach is often the better value. We can compare the all-in cost, including meals, for your specific route.
Do you have accessible sleeping rooms?
Yes. The Accessible Bedroom is a lower-level room with extra space and an accessible private bathroom. Inventory is limited, so tell us about mobility needs and equipment when you call.
Auto Train
Vehicle rules and terminal basics for the Auto Train.
Can I ride the Auto Train without a vehicle?
No. The Auto Train is designed for passengers traveling with a vehicle. Every passenger reservation must be linked to a vehicle reservation, and the vehicle fee is priced separately.
How much does the Auto Train cost?
Coach passenger fares commonly start around $95 one way; standard vehicle transport commonly starts around $250. Roomettes, Bedrooms, and larger vehicles cost more. The total depends on direction, date, accommodation, and vehicle size.
Where does the Auto Train depart?
The northern terminal is Lorton, Virginia, about 30 minutes from Washington, DC. The southern terminal is Sanford, Florida, about 30 minutes from Orlando. There are no intermediate passenger stops.
Changes, refunds, and tickets
What happens after you book, and what to do when plans change.
Can I change or cancel my reservation?
Most tickets can be changed or cancelled under the fare rules attached to that ticket. Refund eligibility, fees, and deadlines vary. We explain the rules before you book and can handle changes when plans move.
How will I receive my ticket?
Most reservations are issued as e-tickets and sent to the email address on your booking. The operating carrier may also send a confirmation. If you do not receive one, call us before traveling.
What if my confirmation has an error?
Call us immediately. Corrections may be subject to carrier rules, fare differences, or fees, and waiting until departure can limit the options.
Do you book groups?
We can help with group questions within the carrier’s rules. Call with the number of travelers, route, and dates so we can check the available accommodations and any group requirements.
Do you only book the four routes on this site?
Our content focuses on the California Zephyr, Empire Builder, Coast Starlight, and Auto Train, but call us if you are considering another Amtrak route. We will tell you honestly whether we can help.
